Archiac is the capital of the Petite Champagne cru (area). The canton of Archiac comprises 17 communes that are located in the middle of the Petite Champagne vineyards. Three rivers traverse this commune; Le Trèfle, Le Tâtre and Le Né. There are about 850 people living in Archiac which is situated at 110 m above the see level. Much of the history begins around XIIth century, religious wars of the Middle Ages and the Protestants arrival in the early 1900s.

Main towns in the canton of Archiac are: Arthenac (XIIth century church, XVIIth century Logis de Pimbert), Brie-sous-Archiac (Windmill from 1500s, fabulous Logis de la Houlette from 1462), Celles, Cierzac (church from 1700s), Germignac (interesting church from the XIIth century), Jarnac-Champagne, Lonzac (a church of Gothic structure and Renaissance interior dating back to 1530), Neuillac, Neulles, Saint-Eugène, Saint-Lheurine, Saint-Ciers-Champagne, Saint-Maigrin (château from XVIth century), Saint-Martial-sur-Né (Roman church) and Saint-Germain-de-Vibrac.
