A pretty town of about 6000 people on the way between La Rochelle and Angouleme (road D939) and at the exit 34 of A10 Autoroute Paris - Bordeaux. It is situated at the right bank of the river Boutonne. It was an important town along the way of St. Jacques de Compostella.

There are many buildings from XV century in the Old Town. The main attractions are

  • Abbaye Royale build in 817, destroyed during the subsequent wars, it was rebuild in the XVII century. The unfinished but full of history abbey towers dominate the town.

  • Clock Tower from XV century

  • The Center of European Culture is located at the Abbaye Royale monastery

It is also a home of the Nautic Club Angérien ( N.C.A.) waterpolo team that finished respectful 2nd in the 1996-97 regular season in France and qualified for the Coupe d'Europe. Great fun, great competition and worth stopping by.
